Understanding Gynecomastia

Unless you are in the medical field, you might not be familiar with gynecomastia, or breasts in the male form. It is true that not only women have enlarged breasts, but a good number of the male population suffers from it. This is the reason why researchers and surgeons developed procedures to reduce enlarged breasts in men.

Men who suffer from gynecomastia need not to worry because it can now be cure by plastic surgery.

Causes of Gynecomastia

There are many factors as to how a male incur more prominent breasts. These include genes, hormonal imbalances, use of steroids, obesity, liver disease and many others. Normally, this condition is from the abundant growth in the glandular and fatty tissue in the male breast which gives them a small to medium breasts. 40-60% of men experience it. It can also be present since birth, during the onset of puberty or simply the aging process.

Do You Have Gynecomastia?

Although it occurs in people with normal weight or body fat composition, it can also be from being overweight. If your case is such the latter, adhere to a diet plan and exercise; and if it does not solve your problems or you still feel as though you have fatty breasts, chances are, you might have the condition.

These are Your Choices

Your options normally depend on the cause but generally, most men choose to have it removed either by liposuction, manual fat extraction or mesotheraphy. You can have it removed at any time as long as you are in healthy condition and has realistic expectations. For best results, you can always consult a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Preparation Prior to Procedure

If you choose to have it removed, be sure to ask your surgeon about how to prepare. Just in case you become jittery on the actual day, always prepare before it arrives. Do not drink or eat anything after midnight on the evening prior to your operation; arrive in the clinic clean—freshly scrubbed with your instructed soap, no deodorant, powders, cologne, etc. You should also ask your surgeon about Vitamin C to be taken weeks prior the surgery. This is essential in good healing and to ward off colds or flu.

There are still other ways of preparing for the operation and you can always ask your surgeon about it.

What to Expect after the Operation

Expect that after your operation, you will be swollen and bruised; if such occurs, don’t panic because it will subside sooner or later. Your chest will feel more tender, stiff and sore a few days after but consult your doctor as to when you can move even just for a few minutes. Resting all day can lead to more blood clot which is very dangerous. Also expect pain, heat tingling, prickling and even burning sensations. This is caused by minor nerve damage but all you sensations will come back again after a few weeks.

Overall improvement should be expected in just a few weeks. Swelling and bruising will have subsided this time and results will become more obvious. More so, it takes about 3-6 months for the rest of the swelling to subside.

Breast augmentation in the Philippines is not just limited to women. Gynecomastia procedure is available for most plastic surgery clinics in the country. What’s important is that you find a board-certified plastic surgeon to ensure that only the best procedure will be practiced.

Facts on Breast Augmentation

Learn the facts of breast augmentation in the Philippines from Dr. Edwin Paul V. Magallona.

Breast Augmentation, also known as, augmentation mammoplasty is the type of plastic surgery that involves placing of silicone or saline breast implants either behind the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle to add size, shape, and fullness to the breast. Breast augmentation can be performed to make smaller breasts appear larger, balance breasts that are asymmetrical, or restore fullness that has diminished with age or as a result of pregnancy. This procedure to enhance and increase the size of a woman’s breast is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures.

The surgery consists of making an incision, lifting the breast tissue, creating a pocket in the chest/breast area, and placing an envelope containing a soft, natural feeling implant material underneath. Although several implants are available at the present time, the implant which is used nearly universally for augmentation purposes is made of a silicone rubber sack, which is filled with a saline solution. Under certain conditions, silicone gel implants can be used. There are a variety of implant designs, all of which have advantages and disadvantages. Your surgeon will discuss the choice of implant, reasons for the selection, and will review with you the size changes that are possible with the operation. The surgical time for a breast augmentation is dependent upon many factors including the surgical approach used, location of the breast implants, the patient’s anatomy, and type of anesthetic used. Generally, the procedure requires a range of 1-3 hours.

Selecting a breast surgeon is undoubtedly the most important decision a patient can make about her breast augmentation. In addition to being board certified and experienced in breast enhancement surgery, the surgeon should be someone the patient feels comfortable with. Good credentials provide a reasonable indication of a doctor’s qualification to perform cosmetic surgery, and should serve as the basic starting point. Patients should then ask the surgeon about his experience. How long has he been in practice and how many times has he done the procedure you are considering? The broader your surgeon’s experience are, the greater your chances for a successful surgery.

Breast augmentation is fairly safe, but no procedure is completely risk free. Some of the more common possible complications include postoperative infection, hematoma (a blood clot in the breast tissue requiring evacuation of the blood clot during a subsequent surgical procedure), implant rupture, deflation or leakage, capsular contracture, calcium deposits, changes in nipple or breast sensation, interference with mammogram readings, shifting of the implant.

Breast Augmentation Surgery: The Procedural Steps

Breast augmentation surgery in the Philippines could be done as an inpatient or an outpatient surgery depending on your surgeon and the method that has been chosen. However, most of the time, breast augmentation is done as an outpatient surgery so that the patient could take a rest overnight inside the hospital. Either way, this procedure usually takes an hour or three hours for both breasts.

There were some activities that you should stop few weeks prior to your surgery to avoid complications such as drinking alcohol, smoking and taking aspirins. If you think you are ready to take your breast augmentation surgery then study the following procedures to have an overview on how it is usually done.

1. General or local anesthesia will be administered first for your comfort. You could discuss with your surgeon the type of anesthesia that is best for your surgery.
2. Incisions will then be made to make a pocket within your breast tissues for the breast implant. There are several implants available in the country such as silicone and saline breast implants. Silicone implants are pre-filled with soft, elastic gel and may require a longer incision for implant placement. Saline implants, on the other hand, are filled with sterile salt water. Saline implants may be pre-filled but it could also be filled during the surgery itself for further modifications.
3. The chosen breast implant will then be inserted into the pocket either under the pectoral muscle or directly behind the breast tissue, over the pectoral muscle. The method for inserting and positioning implants depends on the type of implant, the degree of enlargement desired, your body type, and your surgeon’s recommendations as well.
4. After the implants were placed properly, the surgeon will now close the incision with layered sutures in the breast tissue. The skin of the breast will be closed using an adhesive or surgical tape.

You could go home few hours after the breast augmentation surgery or you might stay in the hospital if your surgeon asked you to. All dressings or bandages will be removed after several days and you could go back to your normal activities at the direction of your surgeon. You will experience swelling and soreness for a few weeks and you will also be asked to wear a support bra. You surgeon will give you some medications to apply or to take orally to reduce pain and to hasten the healing process.

Risks of Breast Augmentation

It may make your body more beautiful but are you aware of the risks of breast augmentation?

Studies and cosmetic surgeons have proven that there are indeed documented leakages of implants because of aging of the implants, contraction of the outer shell, or injury which the breast may sustain. When this happens, make sure that you have your implants removed to avoid further infection.

What is capsular constracture? This condition results from the shrinkage of scar tissues around the breasts, hardening them. Immediately seek your surgeon’s advice.

As a result of the incision or displacement of the nipples, it may either become too sensitive or lose sensation. This in turn may affect breastfeeding.

Mammography is a procedure recommended for women over 40 years old so that cancer of the breast may be detected and early treatment administered. If you underwent breast augmentation, make sure to inform your physician and the technician of such fact. The implants may make it hard for the doctor to detect cysts, thus careful reading must be employed.

It must be kept in mind that complications due to implantations such as infection or capsular constracture cause severe pain in addition to the pain of healing wounds from the operation.

Infection may mean that the implants be removed. Before undergoing another surgery, make sure that the infection has completely cleared up, otherwise more sever complications will result.

It is not uncommon for women to be dissatisfied with the result of their operation. Some of the popular complaints include unnatural appearance, creases or wrinkles, and permanent scars.

A surgery is not a particularly fun experience. Pain does not end with the procedure. It continues throughout the recovery period, and may even continue in cases of infection or rupture. When complications arise after going through such treatment, this means that you have to go through the painful experience a second or even a third time from your cosmetic surgeon.

Breast Augmentation: What You Need to Know Before Deciding to Undergo the Enlargement Procedure

Planning to undergo breast augmentation? Learn What breast augmentation is first and what you should ask yourself before you take the procedure.

Breast augmentation is a surgical operation that involves increasing the size of a patient’s breasts by adding natural fat or implanting silicone in them. This kind of procedure generally does not entail a prolonged stay at the hospital. It is under a procedure belonging to the outpatient department and often done bycosmetic surgeon. This means that the patient can immediately go home after the 2 hour operation or after the grogginess of the general anesthesia has worn off. For those whose tolerance for pain is extremely low, local anesthesia may additionally be injected in the breast area.

Breast augmentation procedure entails 3 incisions: around the areola or the dark part of the skin just around the nipple, and along the slope of the breast. The new location of the nipple once the fat or silicone has been placed will also be marked by an incision. The second step of the procedure is the removal of the skin from the lower slope of the breast. The rest of the breasts are then moved to a higher location. All incision will then be stitched together.

Before the advent of silicone implants, saline filled implants were utilized by doctors. Saline is basically salt and water. It is also the primary ingredient used in intravenous solutions. The solution is then enclosed in a silicone shell before it can be ready to be implanted in the breasts.

According to a Philippine cosmetic surgeon, here is a list of questions you have to ask yourself before proceeding with the breast augmentation process. Why do I need breast augmentation? What are the benefits of this operation? Are there side effects which I should orient myself with? Is there an alternative to such a procedure? How much will the operation cost? How much time do I need to recover from the surgery?
